Dr. Wayne Dyer, Self help author and motivational speaker (1940-2015)
Wayne Dyer was there for me after my divorce way back when. My happily-ever-after fantasy went by the way side with the dissolution of a seven-year marriage. Even though it was a mutual decision, this split changed me forever.
Night after night I read Dyer’s book until I fell asleep. Despite my grief, his words helped me to get out of bed in the morning and to teach a classroom of students. I put one foot in front of the other: eat, work, survive. That’s all I could do for the first year following our marriage break up. I was 30 years old then and I thought my life was over.
Dyer, a prolific writer, has touched many people’s lives in his quest for the Holy Grail. According to Dyer this spiritual pilgrimage led him to wholeness and a union with his divine self. He continued to teach well into his 70s.
A few years back I witnessed a miracle while attending a conference where Wayne was a speaker. Twenty-five hundred people were there to hear him speak.
During his talk there was a commotion at the back of the auditorium. Someone hollered and the lights went on. An attendee had fallen ill.
Dyer asked everyone to remain calm. He then guided us in a group meditation. For five minutes we sat in total silence, our minds and hearts merged into a healing force that was palpable.
I know it sounds trite to say that a sick person got better at a conference because we sort of “prayed” over them. For me it was not about the conference member getting better, although this was a good thing, it was about being there with 2499 people in collective thought. It was like we were one person, in one skin, going about the business of affirming life.
I do not remember how I came to buy Your Erroneous Zones: Step-by-Step Advice for Escaping the Trap of Negative Thinking and Taking Control of your Life, the book that catapulted Dyers popularity. After an epiphany of moving from hate to love (regarding his absent father), Dyer wrote Your Erroneous Zones in 14 days. It was first published in 1976 by Funk and Wagnalls and became a #1 bestseller. His words set me on my path of discovery.
This book was my bedtime companion for months, read over and over again until I found my footing. Now while it is in tatters and held together by a ribbon, I give thanks.
A message for Wayne,
Thank you for your courage to search for meaning in your life. Thank you for your demonstration of moving from hate into love. Thank you for stepping up to the plate of service.
I hope you are having good time wherever you are…
Julia
